Ignite Sport > News and Blogs > FREE ACTIVITIES AND FOOD! Government-backed programme to be rolled out across Oxfordshire

Schoolchildren in Oxfordshire are being encouraged to sign-up to a packed programme of free holiday camps and food this summer as part of a government-funded initiative.

Delivered by Marston-based Ignite Sport in partnership with Oxfordshire County Council, the Holiday Activity and Food programme (HAF) provides healthy food and engaging activities to pupils from reception to year 11.

The programme has been championed by Manchester United and England footballer Marcus Rashford and last summer engaged with over 600,000 children across the UK.

Sessions in Oxfordshire will be delivered between Monday, July 25, and Friday, August 26, across four venues - The Velocity Stadium in Oxford, Langford Village School in Bicester, East and West Hendred Cricket Club and Witney Community Primary School.

They are suitable for participants aged four to 16.

Andy Francis, Sport Delivery Manager at Ignite Sport, said HAF is enabling children to fulfil their true potential through fully funded activities and food.

“This summer will be a challenging period for some families in Oxfordshire as the cost-of-living crisis squeezes people’s ability to fund increased food and childcare costs,” said Andy.

“HAF ensures all eligible children have access to healthy food plus fun and enriching activities where they can stay active, make friends and learn new skills in an inclusive and supportive environment.

“We believe every young person in Oxfordshire should have the opportunity to connect with our fun programmes. It’s why we’re proud to work in partnership with Oxfordshire County Council to fulfil a national ambition to get each applicable child engaged this summer.”

A Government report revealed 77% of children who took part if HAF programmes last summer said attending the clubs helped to increase their confidence and social interaction with peers.

Families whose children take part in the programme will also be able to access free information and support to develop their understanding of nutrition and food budgeting.

Sessions being delivered this summer in Oxfordshire include Commonwealth Games Camp, Girls Only! Football, Cricket, Multisport, Art Smash, GameTech, FitZone and Football Skills.

Andy added: “Our core objective this summer is to encourage young people to have fun in an active environment and to enjoy lunch together during the school holidays.

“We also want to support the resilience, character and wellbeing of those we engage with in a safe environment which encourages participants not to be socially isolated during the holidays.”

Participants are required to wear trainers or pumps and comfortable clothing. Football boots and shin pads are essential for players attending any football session.
